Murals: I enjoy creating murals. Currently I have a large 4' x 8' mural of the old Gloucester fisherman's wharf on display at the Tyngsboro Public Library.  Recently I completed a mural for a client in Bedford who creates daylily hybrids.  In the 67” x 27” painting of his gardens, I put him in the composition, pollinating by hand, one of his favorite lilies.  The largest mural I’ve created is on the wall of the Olympia Restaurant on Market Street, Lowell.  The work is about 20’ long by 7’ high.  It depicts the ancient building called the Erecthium, which is part of the Acropolis, including the Temple of Athena.  Another wall mural I created was for the late Howard Leighton.  Depicting a scene on the Champs Elyseés, the mural was painted at his penthouse in Lowell.  My largest commissioned mural was for John Cunningham of Weston, and consists of three walls of Trompe L’Oeil scenes of gardens done in his indoor swimming pool room.

Influences: I am influenced by many good artists, but if I were to pick a single source, it would be the Impressionists.  I really enjoy them all.  The way they capture their subjects and scenes is magical.  Atmospheric, or color-perspective, was exaggerated for the illusion of depth (recession of space into the background).  Brushstrokes retain their own character and vitality in their spontaneity.  A contemporary Impressionist, Kevin Macpherson, describes it this way: “For a landscape artist, nothing compares to painting outdoors en plein air (French for “in the open air”).  There’s simply no other way to get the kind of total sensory experience that helps you reach beyond the superficial and to touch the heart of your subject.  Color and light and even sounds smells, combine to create a complete response to the scene.”  Like Kevin Macpherson, I do the majority of my painting on location.  The scenes and subjects of my work are from places I’m familiar with.  I can drive to them easily from my home in Tyngsboro, MA.

I sincerely hope you can look at my work and derive a sense of being there and feeling the vibrations of color and light and beauty that I try to capture in my work.  I hope you enjoy my artwork that I call Scribner Hill Art.  Check out my latest work, too!
